Global Astronomy Month 2022: The World's Largest Celebration ofAstronomy Begins April 1!

Calabasas, CA, March 29, 2022: Global Astronomy Month 2022 (#GAM2022) festival fills the entire month of April with exciting programs for astronomy enthusiasts worldwide. Whether it’s stargazing, sh21.

Global Astronomy Month (GAM), in its 13th year, is organized by Astronomers Without Borders, and is the world's largest annual global celebration of astronomy. Each GAM offers new cosmic ideas and opportunities, and GAM 2022 is no exception, bringing night sky enthusiasts together worldwide to celebrate Astronomers Without Borders' motto One People, One Sky.

This year’s programming highlights include:

Beauty Without Borders Photo Campaign

Skywatchers around the world get set for an eye-catching close encounter between the Planets and the Moon occurring on April 27.

  AWB in partnership with Celestron is putting a call-out for smartphone and camera users to snap and share their photos of this cosmic encounter.

This social campaign #beautywithoutborders will be coupled with an Intragram Live on on the morning of the conjunction, April 27 hosted by SpaceX astronaut, educator and AWB board member Dr.Sian Proctor.Party. Later in the evening AWB partner, The Virtual Telescope Project will e conducting online telescope tour of the brightest star clusters, nebulae and galaxies in the sky above Rome, Italy.

Connections to the Night Sky

AWB’s wide‐ranging programs connects art and culture with astronomy in exciting ways, including ethno-culture, accessibility, inclusion and global connection themed webinars by engaging speakers from around the world (Hong Kong,  Israel, Philippines, Turkey and Argentina among others)  from mindful stargazing to making astronomy outreach more welcoming for girls, and accessible to the visually impaired.

AWB partner programs bring new audiences and participants: Measuring light pollution worldwide in Globe at Night, advocating to value and protect of dark skies with International Dark Sky Association, and classrooms discovering asteroids in the International Asteroid Search Campaign, and more.  

Finally to cap off the month long celebrations, on April 30 a partial solar eclipse will grace the skies across the southernmost regions of South America, and AWB's regional partners will bringing the world this eye-catching celestial event via live-streams from locations across Argentina.
