Astronomers Without Borders’ board of directors is pleased to announce that it has named April Russell as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective August 14, 2023. Being an energetic science educator, communicator and entrepreneur, April brings leadership and strategic planning experience and a passion for positive change within both local and global communities.
April comes to AWB from her role as the founder of Take Space Consulting, where she has spearheaded creation of innovative science education resources that enhance engagement and success, particularly for neurodiverse learners. Her roster of esteemed clients included Astronomy Magazine, Encyclopedia Britannica, and National Geographic, as well as educational companies and government agencies, including Khan Academy, John Wiley & Sons, Pearson Publishing, the US Department of Defense Education Agency, and the US Department of Education.
Prior to her work in the private sector, April was Professor of Astrophysics at Vassar College and Siena College teaching astronomy and physics. She also spent four years at Dudley Observatory as the Astronomer and Program Manager developing and delivering E/PO programming.
April holds a B.Sc. degree in Physics and a M.Sc. in Planetary Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as an MA in Education. She has contributed to a multi-decade asteroid study and has the asteroid 33845 Aprilrussell named in her honor.
