Sunspots Observations at the Birla Planetarium, Hyderabad

By Ravi Raja Pothineni posted 11-25-2023 05:50

In one of the outreach activity programs on the eve of IAU's 100 Hours of Astronomy at the Birla Planetarium, Hyderabad, sunspot observations were conducted to educate the visitors about this fascinating phenomenon. The visitors could observe the sunspots on the sun's surface through telescopes fitted with solar filters and screen projections. These observations were accompanied by interactive sessions where the visitors explained the causes and effects of sunspots and their importance in understanding the sun's behaviour. The outreach programs were successful in creating awareness about the importance of sunspot observations and generated interest in Astronomy and space science among the visitors.

Hey there, @Andee Sherwood! Did you know that Birla Planetarium is one of the oldest planetariums in India? This planetarium has been operational for over 38 years and offers more than six space shows daily in English, Telugu, and Hindi languages.

The BM Birla Planetarium's main objective is to teach amateurs, the general masses, and students a scientific temperament. The planetarium regularly presents the latest facts about space and astronomy and disseminates knowledge about the mysteries and discoveries in our vast universe through the 'News Board' activity. The staff members also organize special interactive sessions for the students as an added benefit.

To engage the visitors while they wait for their turn to enter the dome and enjoy the immersive full-dome experience, interactive exhibits and info-graphics have been added to the foyer area of the Planetarium. Moreover, the planetarium also conducts courses on astronomy and organises exhibitions, outreach activities, and other astronomy-related programs during specific celestial events and astronomy and space-related commemorative days.

I recently joined as a Scientific Officer and organized outreach activities, including Zero Shadow Day, 100 Hours of Astronomy, and World Space Week.

Thank you for sharing your member report!

Could you please tell us more about the Birla Planetarium?  I would love to learn more about it and see some images of the facility, too. Does your astronomy club use it for many outreach events?
