Cosmic Multicultural Bucharest in the Pandemic (122):
Ice Rinks in the Cismigiu Garden
By Andrei Dorian Gheorghe (astro-photo-poem-essay) and Florin Alexandru Stancu (design)
The Cismigiu Garden was a difficult and long initiative between the 1780s and 1850s and the result was the most beautiful park in Bucharest.
From the 1870s, during the winter, its frozen lake became the first (natural) skating rink in the Kingdom of Romania.
Then this lake hosted figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey competitions until the era of artificial ice rinks.
A “legend” says that in 1935 even a team that represented Canada (detached world champion in those years) played in the Cismigiu Park an ice hockey match with the Bucharest team, and the Romanians resisted heroically, losing only 1 to 14!
On January 2, 2021
I admired the sunset near the lake of Cismigiu Park (now a seasonal artificial ice rink).
Then I admired the skaters' outburst.
And finally I imagined that one day
I would see skaters on the ice caps
of the planet Mars.
