Another kind of solar eclipse is the annular one, because the position of the Moon makes this natural satellite too “small” to produce a diamond ring with the Sun.
In May 2012, SARM organized a mini-expedition (president Valentin Grigore and me) to observe an annular solar eclipse in the heart of Japan, together with two Japanese amateur astronomers (Yasuhiro Tonomura and Kiyoshi Izumi) and a British professional astronomer (David Asher), between the participation in the world conference Asteroids, Comets, Meteors in Niigata and a visit to the National Observatory of Japan in Tokyo.
Being in the land of haiku, here is a mini-anthology from observing the phenomenon:
