Beamline for Schools 2025: Empowering Young Minds in Scientific Research

Great discoveries often stem from curiosity, and the Beamline for Schools (BL4S) 2025 competition is a testament to the power of youthful exploration. Organized by CERN and DESY, two leading research facilities known for groundbreaking contributions like the discovery of the Higgs boson and advanced light sources, BL4S offers high school students an extraordinary opportunity to delve into the world of particle physics.

This competition, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025, invites students worldwide to propose and conduct experiments using professional beamline facilities. A beamline is where streams of high-energy particles are directed, enabling diverse scientific studies ranging from antimatter mysteries to cutting-edge detector technologies.

What Makes BL4S Unique?

From its inception in 2014, BL4S has welcomed students to work alongside top physicists at CERN and DESY. In 2025, the format allows three winning teams to realize their experiments—two at CERN and one at DESY—supported by professional scientists. This hands-on experience not only nurtures a love for science but also fosters teamwork, creativity, and practical problem-solving.

Who Can Participate?

  • Open to high school students enrolled in the 2024/2025 academic year.
  • Teams must consist of at least five members (up to nine students can visit CERN or DESY).
  • Mixed-gender and cross-school teams, even from different countries, are encouraged.
  • Each team must have one or two adult coaches.

Steps to Join

  1. Preregistration: Teams can preregister online to receive updates, resources, and invitations to special events.
  2. Proposal Submission: A detailed experiment proposal (up to 1000 words) explaining the idea, its feasibility, and the team's motivation is required. Guidance from teachers or physicists is encouraged.

Why Participate?

BL4S is more than a competition—it's an educational journey. Students gain valuable insights into physics, collaborate with global peers, and ignite a passion for scientific discovery. Whether it’s the thrill of experimentation or the joy of learning, BL4S is an unforgettable experience.

Join the legacy of innovation and inspire the world with your ideas. Beamline for Schools 2025 awaits your creativity and curiosity!
