Boogeyman Flies High

The boogeyman myth might be understood
as a way for adults to frighten tots,
or as sources say in all likelihood,
into doing what’s ‘good’ and not ‘should nots’.

Authority figures could menace these
personifications of terror made
if their charges did something to displease,
thus ensuring orders would be obeyed.

A glimpse of dark nebula LDN
one six twenty-two, part of Barnard’s Loop,
against glowing hydrogen background den
might cause some to utter a startled whoop,

that Loop ‘round emission nebulae found
in Orion star system’s Belt and Sword,
abundantly clustered ‘midst the compound
of heavenly lights in the Hunter’s horde.

Near plane of Milky Way galaxy lies
this seemingly ominous silhouette
to spook the stargazers with scary guise
if any are ‘thrilled’ by a ghoulish threat,

or so my poetic reveries veer
in Poe-ish fashion macabre conceived,
a master in mystery tales of fear
as well as balladry of the bereaved.

Speaking of ‘thrilled’, why on earth did that word
come to betoken as ‘thriller’ the noun
something that terrified, spine-chilling spurred,
including the ever loved, funny clown?

And what of dolls, birds, just to mention two
amidst host of others, what will be left
for pleasures delightful that once we knew,
before ‘entertainment’ industry’s ‘theft’?

It’s thus I discern what for me appalls
along with desensitization rife
till nothing can shock in our warring brawls
which lead to the vast destruction of life.

The dust of the Boogeyman which conceals
Orion’s cloudscape is maybe a mere
five hundred light-years from where Mankind wheels
around and around on this earthly sphere.

Perhaps fifteen hundred light-years afield,
young stars are hiding in spacious expanse,
revealed through the Spitzer’s Telescope yield,
where mortals, advanced in existence dance,

might learn to abide in their circumstance
enlightenedly, wishfully thought by me,
as free-flowing fancies in dreams perchance
sail infinitely on the cosmic sea…

Although there are numerous spellings used
the prosopopeia has the same gist
to serve as a warning to be diffused
among the unruly on naughty list.

This theme seems to have a familiar ring
‘mongst even the governments of today,
or what pass as such, as tendencies swing
like pendulums widely swerving in sway.

Description ~ This image actually captures two dark nebulae Lynds’ Dark Nebulae 1621 and 1622. Other nebula in the field include a small part of the much larger Barnard’s loop (ha emission nebula), and two reflection nebula, van den Bergh 62 and 63.

Explanation: The silhouette of an intriguing dark nebula inhabits this cosmic scene… Lynds’ Dark Nebula (LDN) 1622 appears against a faint background of glowing hydrogen gas only easily seen in long telescopic exposures of the region. LDN 1622 lies near the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, close on the sky to Barnard's Loop - a large cloud surrounding the rich complex of emission nebulae found in the Belt and Sword of Orion. But the obscuring dust of LDN 1622 is thought to be much closer than Orion's more famous nebulae, perhaps only 500 light-years away. At that distance, this 1 degree wide field of view would span less than 10 light-years.
