Astronomy Outreach Event for School Children- GAM 2026

As part of the Global Astronomy Month 2026 celebrations, our organisation, ASTRO, in proud association with Astronomers Without Borders, hosted a transformative outreach session on April 26th, 2026, at Surya The Global School.

The event was designed not just to teach, but to ignite curiosity. We brought together students from various schools, creating a collaborative learning environment where the wonders of the night sky were the central focus.

The Outreach Experience:
🌌Introduction to Backyard Astronomy:
The session began with an interactive primer on "Backyard Astronomy." We moved beyond the textbooks to discuss how to navigate the night sky, recognise constellations, and understand the mechanics of the cosmos. For many students, this was the moment the sky shifted from a static ceiling to a dynamic, accessible laboratory.

🪐Lunar and Planetary Observations:
The highlight of the evening was the hands-on telescopic session. Moving from theory to practice, we set up an 8-inch Dobsonian telescope to bring the heavens closer. Students were able to witness the Moon's craters in crisp detail and catch glimpses of planetary features, transforming abstract astronomical facts into unforgettable visual memories.

Around 50 participants attended the session!

Instrument and accessories used:
🔭 an 8-inch Dobsonian telescope equipped with 25-mm, 12.5-mm and 3X Optical Zoom lenses.
